To Be Continued

It is the last day of 2007. When this year started, little did we know some of our cats would be finished with their life purposes. The ancients knew when your life purpose was complete, NO-THING would or could keep you here. Animals are no different. When they are ready to leave, it is their timing, not ours. It is often difficult to accept because the love we feel for them resonates deep within our hearts.

The ancients also knew that with endings come beginnings because as the cats so profoundly point out, there is no beginning or ending, just a continuation of WHAT IS. When they leave, they are continuing their evolution elsewhere. We feel it as an ending because their physical presence is gone; however, their spirits remain.

Tomorrow, we will celebrate a new year. The animals had several important victories in 2007. Big Cat Rescue will continue to give voice to the Big Cats as they guide and communicate with us what is required to give them their freedom, a birthright which has been taken away by our ancestors and continued through tradition. We thank all the cats for sharing their wisdom and knowledge. We thank the cats that completed their purposes and continue to guide us as we become aware of WHO the cats really are.

Basking In Our Surroundings

A beautiful, warm winter day unfolded as the cats were laying in the sun. Everywhere I went today, they were sleeping and relaxing in any position you can imagine. Some of the cats have come from very difficult beginnings and have found a safe place to call home. As I was thinking how the sanctuary provides them a reassuring presence, so many of the cats started sharing with me how they were basking in their environment and how we could also.

As Sundari rolled on her back, she allowed the sun to penetrate into the depth of her being. Shadow was curled around Sugar enjoying some cozy moments. Canyon was nestled in his basket. Daisy's legs were in the air as her back snuggled the pine needles beneath her. Cameron was stretched as far as his body would allow soaking up the heat from the noon sun. Joseph and his pride had an overall sense of well being just by being in their new space.

The cats said the key to basking in your surroundings is being aware of the wonders we have been given. Allowing ourselves to be enveloped by the warmth and safety of our environment and loved ones can increase our awareness of the beauty that exists everywhere. Realizing we have everything we need at any given moment helps us to cultivate our feelings of contentment. There is nothing we lack. The universe has offered much. It is our responsibility to recognize the gifts and give thanks for being taken care of.

Pool Cleaning Services

I often hear people comment on a cat's unexplained behavior with, "They are a cat!" I assume that no further explanation is needed as if knowing they are a cat answers everything. Point in fact, after several days of splashing and digging in his pool, a couple of the volunteers asked me to talk with TJ, one of the newly rescued tigers, what was behind this "silly" behavior.

The timing was perfect, as TJ demonstrated this behavior when I started talking with him. "It's dirty," TJ pronounced as I asked him if he was having fun. "It's hard work pawing all of this dirt," he replied. "It doesn't look like hard work TJ," I responded as I continued to laugh. "There's one spot that is bothering me, and I am cleaning it." I thought for a moment, forgetting they can read your mind, wondering how much water was going to be left by the time he cleaned the spot.

He suddenly quit and looked up at me. He put his left paw in first, then his right paw followed by his entire body. He walked around in his pool several times and stopped. Then, as quick as a cat can move, he started "digging" again, leveraging his front paws with his strong back legs as the water flew everywhere. Waves of water were rocking back and forth when he looked back at me and said, "Done." With that, he flipped his tail up and jumped out of his pool. As I stood shaking my head, one of the volunteers came up from behind and asked me if I had talked with TJ. Yes, I had talked with TJ and found that he has a neat streak and doesn't like his pool dirty. Another thing a cat can do...pool cleaning services.

Merry Cat-mas!

Tiger Simba at Big Cat RescueToday is celebrating a birth that happened long ago, but we can celebrate a new birth that occurs every moment. Helping to care for the Big Cats is an honor and privilege, one that I would not be aware of if they had their freedom. BEING wild and able to BE who they are, they would come and go, seldom to be seen by human eyes. Caring for them in their natural environment demands awareness and responsibility on our part aswe become aware of the purpose all of us share in each other's lives, no matter what form life expresses itself.

Every moment, we have an opportunity to birth a new thought, a new realization, a new way of BEING that is in harmony with the One. There is nothing that happens anywhere that doesn't affect everything everywhere. The cats at Big Cat Rescue remind us we have forgotten this ancient wisdom. They reveal to us daily where we are out of balance and how to naturally return to wholeness. When we look into the eyes of the cats, we see how lost we are, yet see the love and compassion that it requires to remember our connection.

Today, let us BE the solution, not the problem. The Big Cats are compassionate companions leading the way as we awaken from the dark nights of our souls into the light that has always been there waiting our return. From the Big Cats, Merry Cat-mas!

Understanding the Defense

It is Christmas Eve and perhaps you have been shopping all day. Unfortunately, some people will be rude and impatient. It can be very confusing when you feel threatened by people reacting inappropriately. Your buttons can be pushed, and you find yourself acting in a defensive manner. It's easy to react unless you have a heightened awareness that allows you to see through the other person's defense mechanisms.

Enya, a South American Cougar, has felt scared in her new surroundings. Instead of putting up walls and withdrawing, she knows to be quiet, listen and watch to see what is really going on. Enya has an idea that has helped her understand her defensive behavior. Sit down for a moment and close your eyes as you see Enya walking towards you. Ask Enya to help you think back to a time when you felt threatened and reflect upon how you guarded yourself, whether it was through anger, withdrawl or laughter. Remember the triggers for your reactions, and the fear you felt about allowing others in. This will provide the understanding you will need when you encounter someone who has their defenses up.

Allowing ourselves to remember our own ways of functioning, and the fears that made us put up our walls, gives us a way to empathize with another person or animal rather than simply analyze their patterns. Enya is teaching us to reach out with kindness and an open heart in order to help someone through their struggles. By understanding our defensive behavior through being quiet, listening and watching, we will be able to lower other people's guard and support their healing.

WHO AM I?

I am a pouncer. I like to catch things. I am a dainty cat even though I am a Big Cat. I also have a pretty face. I get scared easily. I have recently moved and am adjusting to my new home. There is more activity where I am now than I have ever had. Sometimes I will run and hide when I see something new that makes a loud noise. Most often, I am very curious and will follow you around. Are you curious Who I Am?

Don't Mess with Purr-Fection

The holiday season is in full gear. People are rushing around trying to buy the latest gadget or preparing for family reunions. Talking with people lately, most of them are ready for the holidays to be over. Listening to how people are so stressed and fatigued, I wanted to know what the cats thought about all of this busy-ness.

I never know who wants to talk or what they want to talk about. I just keep an open heart and listen. When I asked the question, "What do you think about the way people go crazy this time of the year?", here is what I heard.

"Don't mess with Purr-Fection," came the answer in a dainty, very feminine voice. "You don't remember you are purr-fect, so you are always TRYING to do this or BE that or buy something that will be purr-fect. BEING in a state of TRYING gives the illusion of impurr-fection. When you remember you are purr-fect, you will quit TRYING to BE or get anything. You will realize you are and have everything you need." Simple wisdom from Purr-Fection, the most beautiful Ocelot you will ever see.

Trash or Treasure?

It has been said, "What is one man's trash is another man's treasure." Today, I was honored by helping to give enrichment to the small cats. Instead of being thrown away as trash, Christmas trees that had not been sold were donated by a local retailer, and the cats found new treasure.

The branches from the trees had been cut from their trunks filling the air with the aroma of fresh pine needles. The needles were soft and pliable ensuring they would not pose a danger to the cats. I counted the number of cats I would be treating and quickly filled a bag. So heavy where the branches, I dragged my sack along the ground, arousing the interest of several cats as I approached their Cat-A-Tats. Calling them by name, they magically appeared with their noses sniffing the air. Curiosity overcame them as they hurried to see what they could do with their new treasure.

I laughed as I some of them didn't waste anytime rolling on their branches, marking them by either rubbing or spraying, tossing them in their air, trying to twirl them as a baton and carrying them off to another area of their home. Others sat and asked, "Where's the meat?" A couple of the cats begged for another one after they quickly tore the branch apart wondering if something could really be this easy. Another day to be of service to BEINGS who constantly remind us what is truly important in life...compassion for one another.

Bobby's Heart Cravings

Bobby "Blue" Rose can eat until the cows come home. This is one of her favorite activities and loves food. It's not about eating, it's about passion, and her passion is food. She doesn't apologize for it, she just eats and eats more. As a result of her acting on her passion, she has blossomed. Bobby wants to know what you are craving so you too can blossom.

Do you feel stressed and overwhelmed right now? Are you taking care of yourself? Do you make time for what makes you feel good or are you following your passion? If not, Bobby "Blue" Rose purrs to invite you to go somewhere you can feel the earth beneath your feet. Take off your shoes. It is very important to take off your shoes and stand bare footed on the ground. This will assist you in connecting with Mother Earth and yourself. Take a deep breath, and feel the stress draining into your legs and into the earth. Visualize Bobby and observe her movements. Observe how she gracefully flows and conserves her energy for the important tasks. Notice how she goes after what she wants without hesitation.

Bobby is leading the way to help you get reconnected and grounded so you will know what you are craving in your life. Call on the spirit of the Bobcat when you have been around a lot of social activity and noisiness and need to withdraw into solitude and silence, so you can hear what your heart is craving. Bobby "Blue" Rose will help you see in your time of darkness and confusion. Send Bobby a heart hug, and thank her for her guiding spirit.

WHO AM I?

Stalking is one of my favorite activities. I am an old cat, so I don't pounce like I used to. I can still spit good. I live with my kind. Don't make a lot of noise around me. I don't like loud noises. I can eat everything you can give me and more. I have lived here for a long time. I remember a time when I was close to humans. I only see the people who help keep my home clean. I used to be scared a lot, but have calmed down through the years. I guess my name has helped me blossom into Who I Am.

Is An Animal A Thing or A Being?

This news story is no longer available on the internet; however, Kinship Circle reposted it, and I felt in light of the rescues that Big Cat Rescue has been involved with lately, it is a timely consideration. What happens to us as we come into the world knowing truth and as we "mature", we lose our connection with nature and as a result, with ourselves? Out of the mouth of a babe who remembers his connection with One...

IS AN ANIMAL A THING? OR A BEING?
By JAMPA WILLIAMS and NOAH S.B. WILLIAMS
The Hartford Courant, http://www.courant.com/
11/12/07 -- Recently, my son Noah ran afoul of his school's curriculum when he refused to classify an animal as a "thing" during a grammar lesson.

Thing, as in "person, place or thing," a time-worn method of identifying whether something is a noun. Noah, being 7 and an animal lover, would not back down and "correct" his classification of animals, which he felt should be regarded as "beings," and he was less than fully cordial when his teacher gently insisted he change his response. Noah felt that, rather than "persons, places and things," the classification system should be "Beings, Places and Things."

As Noah's mother, it is my responsibility to instill in Noah the proper habit of cordiality and respect when disagreeing with others. I encouraged him to show greater respect for his teacher in the style of his response, but I also told him I was proud of him for speaking up on behalf of beings who cannot speak up on behalf of themselves.

Language is powerful. I am raising Noah with an abolitionist ethic. He is conscious of the vulnerability experienced by any being who is regarded as a
thing, as an "it," rather than as a sacred companion in our midst.

To be regarded as a thing is to be regarded as an object lacking liberty, protection or rights. A being regarded as a "thing" or an "it" lives or dies, thrives or suffers, according to the consent or even whims of those who hold power over him or her. Often, human beings have bestowed and continue to bestow upon other human beings the classification of "it," and the results are, and always have been, horrific and unconscionable. Treating any sentient being as a "thing" or an "it" produces results no less horrific, no less cruel.

Noah wrote this essay when I encouraged him to find a positive way to express his beliefs. He wrote from the very heart of his heart, where his
love for all beings warms his very existence...

HERE IS 2ND GRADER NOAH’S ESSAY:
Why Animals Should Not Be Called Things, By Noah S.B. Williams
Animals should not be called things because they are beings, not things.
Shame on the people who call animals things.

If I could I would give the person who first called animals things a talking-to. I would not call animals things.

Think about this. If you loved someone, would you call them a thing? I wish no one had ever called animals things.

Why would you call your pet a thing?

A rug or something is a thing, but not an animal. He or she is not a thing!
This is not funny, it's all true. I would not lie to you about this. It's not a joke.

Do not lie to me, either.

3 in 1

Sultan is a rather frisky Ocelot that tour groups can sometimes catch a glimpse of if they are quick to look. He definitely has an attitude and knows he is rather striking, not only in looks, but also with his paws. As I was talking to the cats today, he caught my attention, and I couldn't help but laugh as he was explaining one of his body parts to me.

Can you guess which body part he was describing as he said, "It's a comb, it's a prey-catcher, it's a bone cleaner." It took me a while, but finally I guessed it when he started grooming, followed later by wrestling a gekko and licking it and lastly, finishing off the last bit of meat from a bone that was left as a result of his hunting skills. Do you know what it is yet? It's his tongue. I must admit Sultan expanded my awareness of how limiting my thoughts were about a cat's tongue. Nature is awesome how it supplies everything anyone needs especially the animals.

Getting High

The day after Thanksgiving is traditionally one of the busiest days for the sanctuary. As I arrived in the cool air this morning, Cheetaro was there to greet me. He must have known the sanctuary was expecting a lot of people because he was putting on a show. So excited to see all the activity, he couldn't decide which area would serve his needs so as not to miss anything.

He ran from one end of his Cat-A-Tat to the other. Leaping into one of his trees, he stretched out his long body, testing each branch before putting his full weight on the entire limb. He quickly jumped higher and higher until his head was touching the top of his Cat-A-Tat. Perched purr-fectly in the neck of the tree, he sat quietly with only his tail twitching from side to side.

As the people started to come for the tours, he quickened his pace, streaking across any obstacle that laid in his path. A golden streak of light caught the attention of everyone who was checking in. How magnificent Cheetaro was as he expressed his delight and anticipation of the day. His communication was clear-climbing high would provide him the best vantage point to see the overall picture unfolding. How often do we think we see the overall picture from a perspective of standing at the bottom of the tree instead of climbing to the highest branch?

The Shadow Knows

I am always reminded why big cats don't make good pets when it comes to feeding time. No matter how cute and sweet they are as they lure you into complacency, when the food appears, so does the wild cat. Thanksgiving is always a nice time for the cats because of the different food they receive. Whether it be a turkey, cornish hen or some other kind of fowl, I stand in awe as they devour their fresh food. Wondering what the cats thought about this special meal, I knew immediately who to ask because as always, The Shadow Knows.

I felt guilty as I asked Shadow how he was enjoying his meal. "I want this everyday," he replied. I smiled and said, "You are already big enough, Shadow. If you eat like this everyday, we'll have to expand your Cat-A-Tat." Shadow continued to eat as he said, "To keep my body strong, I need whole food. Whole food is good food." As Shadow spoke this truth, my mind went back to when I was a child, and my grandmother always grew our vegetables. She would make homemade biscuits with all the fixings. Through the years, as time has accelerated, we have forgotten that whole food is good food. What we tend to consume these days has been processed, and there is very little nourishment. As a result, our health has suffered.

"Yes, whole food is good food, Shadow." Maybe Thanksgiving should be called Thanks-Living as the animals remind us to enjoy health, we have to be whole and that includes good food. Another revelation from a cat we can count on because The Shadow Knows. From all the big cats and volunteers from Big Cat Rescue, Happy Thanksgiving!

TJ's Inner Warrior

Have you ever felt trapped and didn't know what to do? TJ, one of the new tiger rescues at the sanctuary, felt the same way. He was trapped and caged for years, but the spark within never went out. Did you know you also have this inner spark? It may be underdeveloped for several reasons. Don't focus on the reason. Focus on how to realize it and help it to awaken. TJ wants to serve as a role model to help your inner warrior awaken.

If you feel the fiery essence within has barely been a spark, TJ asks, "Do you desire this sleeping ally to wake up?" If so, it is very simple. TJ says close your eyes and visualize him on a daily basis. He is going to serve as your role model that embodies the qualities of strength, courage, vitality and confidence. Know these same qualities are within you. Confirm you have the ability to handle this energy in a responsible way and trust as you act to use it. "Quantumplate" TJ's strength to stand up for himself. See him as a spiritual Being who persevered in horrific conditions and who doesn't hesitate to demonstrate what he likes and doesn't like.

By working with TJ as a role model, you will be remembering these same qualities that are within. All you have to do is act as though you remember and before long, when you need to stand up for yourself, you will. When you have a dream, you will know you have the courage and fortitude to see it realized. The next time you are scared, this inner fire will assist you in moving forward. When you feel like stoking the fire, feel TJ in your heart as he guides your inner warrior.

WHO AM I?

You can hear me growl when there is a big man near by. I am quick to jump and defend my home. Sometimes I get fussy with my mate and let her know I am the one who is in charge. I am gaining weight and like the water view I have. Some people say I have a big head, but it's just the way I am. I like to lay in my pool and relax as I wait for a duck to wander by in hopes of having an extra meal. I am grateful for my new life. I will keep an eye on everything around as you guess Who I Am.

Stellar Dreamtime

If you had no words to convey who you are to someone, how would you do it? Long before we developed verbal communication, every living creature received information through "quiet knowings." Jade is sharing insights into why stars form in the shape of animals and how this information can help us.

Jade invites you to join her in a dark area where the stars can be seen at night. As we look up at the night sky with Jade, the "Star Power" connects us with our ancestral roots, something that has no words. The star Beings communicate information to us by means of shapes and symbols. It is their alignment that creates the communication that is received at our cellular or DNA level and is processed by our heart. This is the "quiet knowing" that comes from observing the formations.

Science has proven sacred geometry conveys information just like the star formations. This is
heart language. The animals in the sky can help us remember this universal language if we listen in stillness. Jade knows there is power in stillness and in the stars. Dream tonight about Jade and thank her for the memories found in the star power.

Many Paths to Oneness

Even though the opposite of light is dark, Bagheera, a beautiful black Leopard, acknowledges the truth that both are required for wholeness. She has suffered much pain in her life, yet moves forward on a path that is not always understood. She is seldom seen at the sanctuary except by a few of the qualified volunteers to help take care of her and yet, she remembers her connection with others that makes it difficult to see any separation.

If you have been told you were different all your life, Bagheera has an inspiring thought she wants you to know. As you close your eyes, feel yourself blend with the space that surrounds you. Bagheera asks you let go of any feeling of separation. Consider in what ways you have been told you are different. As you see the difference, see the oneness. We all have one heart, one brain, share the same planet, experience the same emotions at various times in our lives, and have an intelligence that resides within us. Paradoxically, seeing the differences and oneness at the same time is an important step in becoming aware of the value each living creature has in the Divine plan.

Respecting the many paths we choose to travel dissolves the illusion there is only one path to Oneness. We affirm how interconnected we are and come from a position of compassion, a path becoming more traveled as Bagheera inspires us towards wholeness. Send a quiet "Namaste" to Bagheera. She knows this means "that which is sacred in me honors that which is sacred in you."

WHO AM I?

I am as dark as night. You can see my eyes at night as they pierce the blackness. You won't see me on the tour path as my home is on a road less traveled. I was declawed so I wouldn't be able to destroy or hurt anything or anyone. But, I am a big cat and wild at heart. Removing my claws made me very angry. I always wanted to be a mother. I don't have any kittens, only a mate that is hard to find at night. Take a big guess Who I Am.

Only The Best Peaches

When was the last time you received something and didn't feel as though you deserved it? Peaches knew something better existed for her, but when she finally received a new home, it didn't take much time for her to adjust to her bigger surroundings. She didn't give it a second thought. She jumped right in there to check out her new home, and the other servals she would soon get to know. Peaches didn't question her worth in receiving this gift, she just felt gratitude.

Do you want to know the best way to avoid rejection and feelings of unworthiness? Peaches has a juicy tip for you. Stretch out in your favorite chair and close your eyes. Ask Peaches to come close and help you as you let out a deep sigh. Think of something you really want. Visualize yourself receiving it. See as many details as you can. Feel yourself receiving it. Act as though you already have it. Are there any feelings of not deserving it coming to the surface? If so, Peaches reminds you that the universe is providing it to you because you helped to create it.

By allowing yourself to accept this gift, you will feel the tenderness in your heart that will naturally shift from unworthiness to a deep feeling of gratitude. Holding the gift in your heart says "yes" to the universe and gives thanks. Send Peaches a heart hug full of thanks as you see yourself in a new way as she has helped you shift from questioning any unworthiness to a heart full of gratitude.

WHO AM I?

I don't come from Georgia, but I am very sweet. In my younger days, I only knew the feel of concrete under my paws and had a small run. I didn't know what to do with all this new space when I came to the sanctuary. Now, I chase the lizards and butterflies. I like to lay on top of my den which is surrounded by palmetto bushes. I am always waiting for a hose to come close to my Cat-A-Tat. You can always count on a hiss when you say hello. I will melt your heart when you know how grateful I am to be here. No more juicy details until you guess Who I Am.

WHAT IF?

The cats ask, "WHAT IF........You were aware and remembered the Golden Rule-Treat others as you want to be treated. Are you treating us as you want to be treated?

Embraceable You

What do you do when a part of you has been taken away to help heal the pain? Shatia, a loving Canadian Lynx, started to hug trees. She couldn't climb the way a cat was created to climb with her claws because she had had the extremely painful experience of being declawed; however, she improvised by using hugs to climb to the top of a branch. Everyone needs a hug and is a great way to reconnect with your heart.

Cats are notorious for using positions to help them be in the right place at the right time. Shatia whispers to come close and lay on your back with your arms relaxed at your sides. Close your eyes and take a deep breath. Visualize someone who has hurt you that you have not been able to release. See them standing in front of you as you reach out with your left arm and wrap it over their right shoulder. Wrap your right arm around their left side of their waist. Give them a hug and feel them hugging back. As they do the same with you, Shatia has just shown you how easy it is to give a heart hug as your hearts are physically in alignment with each other, connecting with a tangible energy flow that will continue after the hug is released.

A hug can communicate several feelings whether it be love, compassion, reassurance, friendship or just a friendly greeting. It is something we crave throughout our lives and can heal hearts. Send Shatia a heart hug for showing you how easy it is to position yourself to create a connection that can help you climb to the top of anything you are doing and help change the world.

WHO AM I?

I can hug a tree better than a bear when climbing. I have to listen to my heart because it is not always strong. I am still very curious about things even though I like to sleep in my favorite spot most of the day. You have to look close to see me, but once you find me, I will acknowledge you with a lift of my head. Some people don't think I am very good looking, and my hair can easily become matted, but I make up for it with how sweet I am. Did you catch a glimpse of Who I Am?

"Cat"ching a Dream

People often ask me about cats in their dreams. When a big cat comes to you in your dreams, they are often there to help you or communicate with you directly. However, the smaller cats are a little different. Here are a few of the interpretations you may find interesting:
  • If you dream of a tortoiseshell cat, you will be lucky in love.
  • If you dream of a ginger cat, you will be lucky in money and business.
  • If you dream of a black and white cat, you'll have luck with children; may also mean the birth of a child.
  • If you dream of a tabby, you will have luck for your home and all who live there.
  • If you dream of a multicolored cat, you will have luck making friends.
  • Dreaming of white cat means good luck.
  • To dream of a white cat means luck in creativity, spiritual matters, divination and spellcraft.
  • A dream of two cats fighting means illness or a quarrel.
  • Seeing a black cat in your dream indicates that you are experiencing some fear in using your psychic abilities and believing in your intuition.
  • To dream of a gray cat means to be guided by your dreams.
  • If you dream about a cat with no tail, then it means lost independence.
  • If you dream of an aggressive cat, it suggests that you are having problems with the feminine aspect of yourself.
  • To dream of being badly scratched by a cat means sickness and trouble.
  • To dream of a black cat is lucky.
  • If you heard the noise of alley cats in your dream, it is a warning to avoid an indiscreet acquaintance in your immediate circle.
  • If you hear the scream or the mewing of a cat, a false friend is trying to do you harm.
  • To dream of seeing a cat and snake on friendly terms signifies the beginning of an angry struggle.
  • Dreaming of a cat is sometimes regarded as a sign of bad luck in the future.
  • American folklore has it that dreaming of a white cat is good luck.

Feelings in Translation

It's not unusual when you see an ocelot for the first time to misunderstand them. Even though they can be real stinkers because their natural home is in the Rainforest, they never mistake what they are feeling. Amazing Grace is very vocal and it would be easy for you to confuse how she is feeling because of all the different noises she utters. Grace has some insights that will help you translate what you are feeling.

Stretch out and relax as you get comfortable. Visualize Grace curling up beside you, and ask her to guide you as you begin to look more deeply at your feelings. Grace is asking you if feeling butterflies in your stomach or feeling your heart beating fast is a sign of fear or could they be translated as excitement and curiosity as a new opportunity comes your way. Sometimes we have not been taught how to welcome an opportunity, so we indulge our anxiety instead of awakening our courage.

Framing events or situations a little differently can drastically shift our mental state from one of fear and resistance to one of openness and excitement. Grace encourages you to be vocal about this new way of seeing things by saying out loud, "I am excited about...." or "I am looking forward to ...". As you verbalize your feelings, you will feel your energy shift from fear, which often paralyzes you, to excitement, which empowers you. Next time you see an ocelot, do as they do, be vocal about how you feel and claim your power as you move into action when the opportunity presents itself. Thank Grace for a new way of translating how you feel into a positive way of BEING.

WHO AM I?

Come see me, come talk with me, come and get to know me. I will make you feel like you have really connected with a cat. I know I am very vocal, but that is part of my charm. You may think I am a real stinker and I am. I wear my feelings on my sleeves as I can be very emotional. I tend to be high strung and get frustrated easily. Enrichment is so important for me. Follow your nose and you will know Who I Am.

Pisces's Mission of Awareness

Sometimes we experience an event that causes our hearts to become very sad. It is at these times we feel like withdrawing from life. Contrary to logic, it is at these times, if we reach out to those we trust, we open ourselves up to receive messages that the universe is communicating to us. We never know what someone else's experience may stir within us to help us expand our awareness and grow.

Pisces, Big Cat Rescue's male fishing cat, knew it was time he continued his evolution in a different realm and left his physical body. Pisces leaving us not only brings a sadness to those who knew and loved him, but also to those who realize we are one step closer to experiencing a species that is near extinction. Having the honor and privilege of personally getting to know an exotic, wild animal transforms you as you realize they are a BEING with their own unique personality and character. It is also very apparent that you are witnessing a moment in humanity's history when we have the opportunity to make a difference in the perspective of how we have considered animals and be a voice to facilitate change and compassion.

Pisces message is one of action NOW. Let us remember the connectedness of every living being. Every time an animal dies, something within us dies. Awareness and remembering this wisdom is the essence of Pisces leaving and only one more fishing cat remains at Big Cat Rescue, and she is helping usher in her wisdom of the Age of "Aquarius." Thank you Pisces for being a part of our lives. We will miss you!

Tobi's Secret

Small and agile, Tobi, a small American Cougar, will catch your heart as soon as you see her. Being around her heightens your sensitivity as you watch her disappear in the thick foliage in her Cat-A-Tat, only to reappear as a magician somewhere else. She will invigorate you, and you will feel good being around her. Tobi knows you can be around people or situations that will drain you of your energy especially if you are sensitive and wants to help keep you strong.

As you practice these self-care exercises, ask Tobi to join you. Preparation is very important for any task, and Tobi wants you to relax and close your eyes as you tune into your own energy and ground yourself by visualizing yourself as a tree. See the roots go deep into the ground. This is the first step Tobi wants you to take before going to a party or participating in any activity. This helps to keep your energy strong and intact. This will also help prevent other energy carrying you away. You can also practice any activity that gives you energy such as a nice relaxing walk or a bath. You can also carry some special crystal or gemstone that protects you and keep it close to you, holding it when you need to be reminded you are grounded and safe.

Tobi also suggests that if things get tough, disappear for a moment just like she does in order to take a deep breath or take a break to check in with yourself and correct any energy imbalances that you may feel. This is a way Tobi keeps her energy strong and is able to open herself up to others. Being sensitive is a good way of BEING. This is The Secret of strength. Tobi knows this Secret can help open hearts that have been closed.

WHO AM I?

I can keep big secrets even though I am small for the kind of cat I am. I will jump to see you and enjoy surprising people. I can see people that come by, but most don't see me because I am not on the tour path. Being so small, I can move quick and love the way my body feels as I spring into action. I am sensitive and will listen to what you have to say. Can I share The Secret of Who I Am?

Guardians of BEING

The world is rapidly changing, so much so that our minds are overwhelmed by all the information we are absorbing and the lack of time to process and integrate it. Stress has become a lifestyle as we try to keep up with and make sense of the shifting consciousness. Technology is encouraging alienation in our world. Even relationships that were here today are gone tomorrow, except one...the one we share with our animal companions.

For some people, the relationship we enjoy with our animal companion is the only relationship we have with another being. There are various reasons for this; however, one of the main motivations is we realize we are not being judged or criticized and are safe. We are accepted for who we are. When we limit our relationships, we find ourselves separate and disconnected not only from the world, but also from our innermost core.

This has serious repercussions because it allows a belief system to manifest as a reality that keeps us blind to what we have lost. In addition, behind this veil of fear and negative emotions, the ego takes charge and reacts from a position of limitation and self-serving interests. There is no love, only fear of not having enough of whatever we are wanting.

Albert Einstein clearly articulated this reality step by step and a solution to manifest a different reality when he said, "A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe," a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest-a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty. Nobody is able to achieve this completely, but the striving for such achievement is in itself a part of the liberation and a foundation for inner security."

The animals are assisting us in breaking free of this delusion by keeping us in touch with our BEING, a place that is beyond mind and ego, our innermost core. When we make that heart connection with our animal companion, they are showing us that we have lost our connection with the whole or ONE only in our minds. When we realize we never lost that connection through unconditional love, we will be able to develop and embrace deep relationships with other beings.

As our consciousness continues to evolve, we will open ourselves up through our hearts with compassion and accept each other and ourselves for who we are. We will know every being is an expression of the Divine. We will have moved beyond judging and finding fault with each other and ourselves. Until then, the animals are filling a critical function in the collective consciousness of humanity as they are caretakers of hearts, Guardians of BEING.

Moon Gardens

Coming out to the sanctuary will provide limitless ways that can inspire new ideas. I generally come with a blank mind and the intention of expecting new and creative ideas. I allow my senses to connect with whatever IS. For example, the last Friday night tour provided some inspiration to create a moon garden. The tour stopped at Tiger Lane to see TJ and Bella. As the guide shared their stories, I saw some "spooky" things that glowed in the dark.

I would not have known what these critters were except Glen, one of our volunteers who gives a great tour, had pointed out the night life whose eyes glow in the dark. As we continued to walk, I started to see Nature's bounty that had been designed to be enjoyed after the sun has disappeared. There were sweet fragrances of flowers, comforting sounds coming from bamboo swaying in the gentle breeze, and foliage that danced in the moonlight.

We are so used to seeing shades of beauty in the sunlight; however, with the help of the cats providing insight into who they are at night, we also have the potential to see shades of beauty in the darkness. Choose an area of your yard that you can transform into a moon garden. It will provide food and nourishment for your soul, and it will remind you that the cats have shared another secret into their world.

Divinity's Family Plan

Family planning can be very difficult as Divinity, a beautiful Blue Bobcat, has discovered. She lives with Takoma, Apache, and Selena, and each one has their own needs. What is very special about this family unit is they can never take a vacation away from each other. So, how do they prepare each day to meet their individual needs and live in harmony with each other? Divinity and her family members chose to take a creative and visionary approach to family planning.

Sneak away from the outside distractions and relax. Think about your family members as you exhale and let go. Divinity asks you to consider what qualities and experiences you want to plan to emphasize and develop within your family unit. Most of us are going to have enough experience to know what is going to work or not with our families. Start by considering what you feel the world needs more of? Divinity felt the world needed more love, so she shows up when people walk by to share the love she has with them.

Determining what you value the most and how to plan and create that within your family is both creative and empowering. It's a great way to BE aware of creating your reality and benefiting the world. This way of BEING can be passed along to your children as they learn how to envision and create what they want. Divinity's family planning not only focuses on being prepared, but how to create a vision for your family that will affect everyone everywhere.

WHO AM I?

Out of the bushes, I will come to see what you have brought me. Even though I like to hide, I am very friendly. I share my home with other cats, and we are like family. I am small, and you may think I am old because of my silver hair, but my personality is as a kitten made of pure gold. I have a strong will and desire to live life to the fullest. If another cat needs help, I will give my time to help them anyway I can. Can you guess Who I Am?

Small Things Count

A smile came to my face as I stood and watched Shere Khan play with a new addition to his and China Doll's Cat-A-Tat. They now have a big "water bowl" and even though they have a huge lake to swim in, Shere Khan was trying his best to get into his new pool. Of course there was no way this was going to happen, but Shere Khan didn't care.

As Khan continued to hug his new pool, China Doll decided she was going to partake of this new addition. Khan quickly let her know her timing was way off. As she backed off, she quietly laid down beside him. Remaining close, she would wait until she thought he had had enough, then she would sneak over to the pool only to be delayed as Khan would quickly return. This interaction continued for quite a while. This was a new dimension for both of them, and you could see the stimulation for their minds and bodies.

It was a gentle reminder that until we no longer need sanctuaries, we should not discount the small things we can provide for the animals as they spend their natural lives in captivity. What we take for granted or don't have any meaning to us can and do make a huge difference in the life of an animal that now depends upon us to help their quality of life. In realizing this connection, could it be that this is a way that provides freedom for all?

Can't Hold Their Licker?

Sometimes, people ask me why the cats behave the way they do. I will ask the cats and it is amazing what they say. For example, you may notice some of the cats licking themselves as you come on the tour. This may bring back memories such as slowly drifting to sleep on the sofa after an exhausting day at work, and the sound of someone who can't hold their "licker" is going to work. Somewhere you muster the energy to ask them to stop before they hurt themselves, but chances are it's not going to be effective because the animal is using licking as a form of communication.

We all know licking is a form of affection and love; however, licking also provides many clues into what the animal is trying to convey to us for their emotional needs. Take for example, when animals have been taken away from their mother at a very young age, they don't have the opportunity to learn a lot of the necessary life skills. As a result, when they get stressed, they will lick themselves in an effort to find comfort. This often happens at night, and the predominant areas they will lick are their paws and legs.

Another reason animals lick is they are doing their own energy work. Often, it can be mistaken for grooming. They are stimulating areas of their bodies that have blocked or stagnant energy. They are trying to release the flow of energy so their body will heal. They will also lick their meridians. This will help you identify an organ that may be out of balance.

Animals have not forgotten that saliva holds healing chemicals that are released by licking. Have you ever cut your finger? What is the first thing you instinctively do? You put it in your mouth and lick the cut. You stop the bleeding in addition to starting the healing process. There is research proving that people who have been paralyzed have been healed and are walking as a result of an animal licking the affected area.

When the annoying sound of the licking begins, listen to what is being said from your heart instead of your head. There is a message being spoken of needing help and guiding you to understand how you can be of service. There will be a unity of compassion as you know it's a good thing when they can't hold their "licker."

Picked Clean

Cameron has a huge responsibility at the sanctuary. Being the King, the cats look up to him. You can hear his roars no matter where you are, and he is very protective of Zabu. He is also an excellent teacher. One of the experiences he shared with me last week involved a bone. One day a week, the cats are given bones and at first glance, it appears to be no big deal unless you ask a cat what they think about their bone.

Before the volunteers could clean the Cat-A-Tats, I noticed that some of the cats had left their bones in different stages of decay, and the bones were being shared with flies and ants or any other creature that happened to be close to it. Everything was working hard to pick away the pieces that were dead. I was watching one of the cats renew his interest in his bone from the previous night. He licked and licked, pulling what little meat was left completely off the bone. By the time he had finished, it was completely clean, and I noticed it was starting to become hollow.

I heard Cameron roar, and I felt the urge to ask him why cats clean their bones so nothing is left but a hollow bone. Cameron shared with me an interesting perspective that we can apply in our lives. Often life has a way of cleansing us of things that no longer serve us. We may feel as though we have been "picked clean." What is left is a clear vessel for our spirits to flow, no different than a hollow bone. We are then able to allow love and compassion to flow without any obstructions. Only Cameron could show us how special bones are.

Stellar Dreamtime

Jade teaches us about our Power Animals in our dream time tonight. As you look up at the stars, you will see animal forms come to life as the twinkle from each star lights up with power. The stars provided information and guidance to the ancients. It was also believed that the animals in the sky came to earth as Power Animals.

Power animals are different than our animal guides. Ancient cultures believed power animals were our spirit guardians that existed in other realms. Some cultures believed that when a person fell ill, their power animal had left them, leaving that person without any protection. Our modern culture has forgotten our connection with a Power Animal.

To find your Power Animal, think about what animal you have always been attracted to or what animal you feel is most like you. Consider any animals you regularly dream about or which animal stir your emotions. You may think about what animal you would want to be or least want to be. Chances are, your Power Animal is not who you think it is because it is your guardian, not guide.

If you want to work with a flower essence that will assist you in connecting with animals as spirit guides, FES has formulated Forget-Me-Not. Medicine Cards by Jamie Sams and David Carson will invite you to choose your Power Animal from a deck of cards. It doesn't matter what vehicle you choose to remember your Power Animal. Be open and affirm that it will show itself to you soon. Keep your eyes focused on the stars above as you fall asleep knowing your Power Animal will appear.

Going Around in Circles

As I often observe the cats, I see things most people don't see. For example, sometimes when Willow is bored, she will walk around in circles. There is nothing special about a circle or is there? It is a straight line that is curved. It is a very simple form. But, could it be the cats are communicating something special to us as they walk in circles?

Some people believe the Zen circle represents enlightenment. Each circle is void of space in the center. It is empty and blank. The curved line is the building block of all life. Buddhist monks create these circles to express their truth. They often write short passages to accompany the circles using different words, but expressing the same truth...."Make your heart child-like, and you will understand."

The cats are always creating. They are not just going around in circles. They know everything begins with the One. They are constantly reminding us of the unity and relationship we have with one another. The cats show us that the unassuming shape of a circle holds great meaning that communicates the key to healing the heart. What does your heart hear as you go around in a circle?

Timing Is Everything

Being in the right place at the right time is often called luck. But, Lucky Lady knows it is being in harmony with the universe's timetables that allows us to find ourselves right where we need to be at the moment. Lucky is an expert at finding what she needs when she needs it. She has confidence the universe puts nothing in her path she is not capable of handling, giving her confidence that she is ready for the opportunity.

Lucky has a couple of perspectives she wants to share, so you will know your time will come. Find a quiet comfortable place to relax, and close your eyes. See Lucky coming your way. Every person fulfills their purpose when the time is right. Delays that can be disappointing may be laying the foundation for future successes that haven't been yet conceived or the universe may have different plans than the ones you have presently pursued. If you feel overwhelmed, you may be unconsciously resisting your purpose. You may need to cultivate flow that will allow you to be in harmony with opportunities that are a heartbeat away from manifesting.

Lucky trusts that in every circumstance you find yourself in, you have co-created it and only need to become aware that timing is everything. Luck has nothing to do with it. The power that lies within ensures our success as we trust the intelligence of the universe will put us in the right place at the right time. Still feel Lucky? Thank her for helping you see things from a natural way of BEING.

WHO AM I?

Try to find me! I am too busy chasing the lizards and anything that comes into my Cat-A-Tat. I have a lot of trees and bushes to keep me busy looking for new creatures. I appear to be fussy, but that's my nature. It's not that I don't like people, I like to be alone. Sometimes I will come to check out what the volunteers are doing, but prefer to stay hidden. I don't need to be the center of attention. There is a lot you can accomplish if you are quiet. My name gives you a clue if you believe you are in the right place at the right time. Do you know Who I Am?

Morgan's Connection

Sometimes we take for granted the people and animals that share our lives. They always seem to be there when we need them, and animals always give from their hearts. Morgan, a very sweet South American Cougar, shared her presence with anyone that came by. She would often come and greet tours, offering them a sample of her purrrring. We would be encouraged to be quiet for a moment and gently bend over slightly so we could hear her voice.

As a volunteer at the sanctuary, I have chosen not to have any favorite cats. They are all unique and special. Each have their own life purpose and personality. It is challenging not to have any favorites because they all will steal a piece of your heart and unknowingly, they have caught you. Words cannot describe the loss in your heart when they decide it is time to leave their physical body and continue life in other realms. The question, "Why" is followed by tears filling your heart, and you wish you could have done more.

I believe Morgan has a message for us regarding how we can help. The cougars have been leaving the planet in mass numbers. Several have chosen to leave this year at the sanctuary. I can't help but think there is a connection, and they are telling us about their plight to survive. Record numbers are being killed on our highways as we continue to destroy their habitat. Morgan is reminding us that we are all connected. Everything we do affects everyone around us. How can we help the cats? Acknowledge our connection with them. Respect the relationship. Give from our hearts before they completely disappear. Thank you for sharing your life with us Morgan. We will miss you.

Seeking Love

Amazing Grace, our poet ocelot, is providing provocative thought as she shares with us another original poem from her heart.

"SEEKING LOVE"

My head bowed, I ask a simple question only of you,
Why seek love when barriers you first need to remove?
Not feeling the love as it tries to get through
Pain is the emotion you have grown accustomed to.

The past you have held onto for many a year
Has built a wall separating what you hold dear.
Seeing events as good and bad
Has created the illusion of things you could have had.

Let go of what you think might have been
And allow your heart to feel before your head can win.
The barriers dissolved and can be no more
You discover love has always been there at the being of your core.

The Shadow Knows

Dusk is creeping into the sanctuary as people have gathered to see the "Night Tour." It's a special time when the cats can be seen with a different perspective. As we start the tour, one of the favorite cats has recently been moved directly on the tour path. Much to his liking, as he is always ready to talk, I hear his luring voice calling me over to him as the tour guide proceeds to share Shadow's story.

"People don't understand Night Tours," Shadow said. "Of course they do," I replied. "They come to see your beautiful eyes shine in the dark, and everyone knows cats are more active at night than during the day." Although I knew this was obvious to Shadow, my mind was racing with any kind of angle I could think of that Shadow already knew. "Do you know why we are more active at night?" At first, I thought this might be a trick question, but my experience with animals has taught me they are pure innocence, so I played along with Shadow and said, "No."

"We are very active at night because of the excitement." "Excitement?" I asked. "We enjoy the night, and there are special opportunities that come with night. But, after the night, comes the dawn. We know the dark of night occurs before the dawn, and we are always excited to see the dawn." I never thought in terms of being excited during the dark times because of anticipation of the dawn or light appearing. Have you? I remained behind to ponder how different people would be if they realized the light always comes after the dark of night and to be excited during the dark times instead of giving up or focusing on the night. The cats focus on the dawn during the night. A self-help book may be forthcoming about what The Shadow Knows.

Showers of Emotional Intelligence

Cleo-Cat-Tra, a very sweet Serval, knows what it is like to hide behind bushes and logs. But, she has had great courage to move forward with her life after being rejected by her human family. It would have been easy to continue to hide her feelings in the thick of a very scary situation, but she choose to express them instead. Our culture has not traditionally supported emotional awareness, and as a result, we have often kept them hidden within our beings. Storing these emotions in our minds and bodies can result in health issues. But, Cleo wants to share how easy it is to simply allow our emotions to be felt.

Surrender to a quiet moment and allow your body to completely relax. No hiding from Cleo as she curls up beside you. Focus on a situation that has hurt you or perhaps you have projected misguided anger at someone. Allow yourself to fully feel your feelings as they arise. Become aware of the area of the body where you are feeling this emotion. Now, as you exhale deeply, see the emotion leaving your body on your breath. Don't mentally analyze or think about why it happened. Just allow your feelings to be felt and released. It is that simple.

Cleo knows that the deeper purpose of our feelings is to transform our inner being. This is how she is able to shower everyone with love and desires that love to be returned. By relaxing and allowing her feelings to flow, she makes space for more feelings to flow. Cleo developed emotional intelligence as she became aware of the importance of feeling her feelings. Shower Cleo with love and gratitude for assisting your emotional intelligence.

Who Am I?

My eyes are dark brown and blend with the logs that I lay behind. I am the favorite of many volunteers at the sanctuary. They have fallen in love with my sweet spirit. I just enjoy the extra attention. It makes me feel good because my first family didn't want me. I will lay close to anyone that comes to clean my home. I am smaller than most cats that are like me. I will shower you with affection. Would you love to guess Who I Am?

More Than A Beautiful Voice

Every time you go to the sanctuary, a variety of voices can be heard as each cat proudly declares their own unique voice. Whether it is Cameron roaring or Arizona hissing, each have their individual signature traits and idiosyncrasies. No two voices are alike. How often do we neglect to hear these resonances under which their verbal expressions are floated over?

For instance, when you hear Arizona hiss, it can fill you with laughter and good feelings or if you hear Cameron roar, pride will swell within your heart and when you hear Bengali or Buffy chuffing, it is as though a long lost friend's welcome is warming your entire body. Shadow's meowing can function as a mantra that is repeated over and over or Amazing Grace's growls and howls can make you feel as though you are an irritation that just won't go away.

The cats know that their voices have the power to heal, love, comfort and transform others. Every time they use their voices, they send their energetic imprint out into the universe and to the people around them. They are communicating what they feel, desire and what they mean. They are making us aware that our voices have an impact, and we can consciously choose what we are expressing, remembering what we are communicating goes beyond what our spoken words are saying. Take responsibility for the power your voice has to impact the people and world around you. Do as the animals do...let your voice be a sound that creates harmony and compassion in this world.

A Tiger Angel

Download tiger photos online here In the Native American traditions, when someone has finished their purpose on this earth, it is time to leave. The decision is made, and they go away to be by themselves and within a very short period of time, they leave their physical body. They do not believe you have to be sick or in the dying process. Often, they are old and have fulfilled what they came to accomplish. So, it was with Saber.

Saber had called the sanctuary home for quite a while. The cats that come to live at the sanctuary have such great love and care that often they grow old, much older than they would if they were in the wild. Saber spent many years in the entertainment field and his body was getting tired. Even though his spirit was strong, he knew it was time to leave.

As we say goodbye to a dear spirit, he wants us to know that he is across the rainbow bridge guiding and helping us in ways he couldn't when he was in physical form. He is giving us the strength and courage to keep moving forward and speaking out for those spirits that long to be free. He will still be performing great acts as a tiger angel. Thank you Saber for sharing your life with us. You will be missed!

Feeling Lost

Baby Cakes is a sweet, small Genet who "found" his way to the sanctuary. He didn't have a map to look at or to help him figure out how he was going to reach his destination. A map helps only if there is one for the territory you find yourself in or you know your destination. So, how did Baby Cakes know the right way to go? Baby Cakes knows humanity is in uncharted territory and covering ground that our ancestors never knew. Not knowing exactly where we are, who we are, or where we are going can leave us feeling lost.

Baby Cakes quickly beckons you to lay down on your favorite blanket and close your eyes. Feel your body relax as you take a deep breath. When Baby Cakes got lost, the beauty he found in his experience was the opportunity to look within himself to find his way. Since he didn't have a map, he had to go on instinct. He knew his inner compass would show him the way. He didn't have an address, but he followed what his inner promptings were saying. Step by step, he kept moving forward, trusting the universe was supporting and guiding him. He didn't wait until he knew where he was going before he started, he kept moving.

If you are feeling lost and don't know where to turn for guidance, follow the lead from Baby Cakes. Feel your own way instead of following an established path. You will learn to trust yourself. It is the trust that connects you with the universe and brings awareness that no matter how lost you feel, as you start your journey, on the inner level, you have already reached your destination. Send Baby Cakes a heart hug as you will never feel lost again because you will trust your instincts and find the way.

WHO AM I?

Pound for pound, I can eat more than any big cat. Volunteers think I am mean, but I am quite the gentleman. I am always so anxious for my food, I run very quickly so I don't miss any. I got lost and found my way to the sanctuary. It wasn't easy though. I had to be with all those cats and dogs for a while. Marshmellows and mush are my favorite things to eat. I like to stay out of the way and am very quiet. Look around under the blankets and you will know Who I Am.

Cat Lore?

As I was volunteering at the sanctuary today, I heard some strange noises coming from the cats. I also noticed some behavior that was a little different to say the least until I remembered this was a full moon. There is so much lore around cats and the full moon, I thought I would offer some possibilities as to why this is so.

Did you know in Ancient Greece, the culture believed at the beginning of the world, the sun and moon created all animals? The sun created the Lion, but it was the moon that created the Cat. Like the moon, the Cat comes alive at night as you observe the bright light of the moon increase in their eyes as they see things that appear to not be there. Their eyes are acting as beams exposing things that were hidden just as the light of the full moon reveals what is concealed in darkness. Cat's eyes have also been associated with the moon as they change from crescent to round. A Greek poet once claimed that cats were so in tune with the moon that their body size would increase or decrease according to the waxing or waning of the lunar cycle.

Finally, at Kirk Braddan, in the Isle of Man, there is an old cross built into a wall of a church that is a wheel cross. The cross is divided into four quadrants, three of which contain cats. There is a lean cat, a plumper cat and one that is just fat. The fourth quadrant contains a shrew mouse. The number of teeth a shrew mouse has is 28 vs. the 26 a common rodent has. All of this correlates to the days of a lunar cycle with the various size of cats representing the stages of the moon. Could it be that the ancients are helping us remember that cats embody a power that is as old as creation?

Stellar Dreamtime

The full moon will occur in two days. Jade asks us to go outside and look up at the stars that will be highlighted by the full moon. What animal constellations do you see? The magic and power of animal totems originate in the heavens above. The stars are alive with knowledge and wisdom. As they come together to form an animal, a unique spirit is created that can be called upon for guidance and help. Jade is helping you remember how the ancients depended upon the spirits of animals to help them in their earthly journeys.

BEING There

One of the greatest gifts we can give to another is to act as their guardian. It doesn't matter if it is for a specific situation or an ongoing commitment, each one will benefit from the relationship. So it is with Shiloh and Indian Summer. Two Bobcats, who have lived together for a long time at the sanctuary, have protected each other and helped one another grow.

While they are neither one very fond of people, I have been inspired by Shiloh holding the space for Indian Summer to allow the opportunity to do what is necessary to move forward in her life. He has provided her with emotional sustenance that has helped prepare her for any challenge that may come her way. His comprehension of her needs has given him guidance on how best he can be of service to her.

Is there someone in your life that your guardianship can enable them to persevere through almost any condition? Shiloh knows that with loving intentions as you enter your role as a guardian, you will help care and protect others as individuals while living their lives with grace.

WHAT IF?

The cats ask, "WHAT IF........You were aware and remembered we not only act "as if" we have feelings, we have them. Would you treat us differently than you do now?"

A Purr-plexing Purrsonality

Not a day goes by that Purrsonality, a mischievous Serval, is not challenged by her environment. At first glance, it appears as though she has nothing to worry about because she has a safe home at the sanctuary. In addition, she gets regular food and has the opportunity to see people on tours. But, Purrsonality is still a wild cat living the rest of her life at a sanctuary. Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she has accepted this as an opportunity to evolve and grow.

Purr-plexing as challenges may be, Purrsonality is offering some insights that make these a necessary process in our spiritual growth. As Purrsonality hisses an invitation to join her, take a deep breath and release any tension in your body as you get comfortable. Close your eyes and feel the compassion Purrsonality has for you. She asks that you remember a situation that broke your heart. She has healed her heart by changing her perception of her life. Instead of dwelling on being in a Cat-A-Tat, she knows she is supported and taken care of. She grows stronger as she puts one foot in front of the other as she rises to the challenge. Often, she goes slow and makes observations along the way. She never thinks about not being ready.

When you feel the world is testing you and giving you more than you can handle, think of Purrsonality's journey as she has learned about herself and now looks for challenges as she knows when you are in the midst of a growing period, it's not always easy to see the reward...but, it's there waiting for you to grow big enough to reach it. Send Purrsonality gratitude for opening your heart to become more compassionate about the challenges not only in your life, but also to the challenges of others as you grow in wisdom.

WHO AM I?

I like to get into things, literally. I get bored easily and am always looking for things to challenge me. You never know what I am going to do. I may be sweet, but I am still wild at heart. As you get to know me, you will know I have a distinct personality. Oops...I mean distinct demeanor. My good looks may fool you into believing I could be trusted, but I am still a beautiful exotic cat. Try to identify Who I Am.

The Shadow Knows

Last year when I first volunteered at the sanctuary, I couldn't hardly find the cats when I would go and clean their Cat-A-Tats because of the lush green foliage that flourished at the expense of my vision. Some of the foliage were weeds and to me, a weed is any plant that grows where it isn't wanted. It was a constant battle to pull and trim the weeds as I would slowly make my way around their Cat-A-Tat's looking for their latest deposits. This year has been no different. As I was wiping the sweat from my face, I kept thinking of the old sayings I remembered as a child about weeds when I heard "there are no weeds." I scurried over to the familiar voice informing me "there are no weeds" to understand why this is so and that only apparently The Shadow Knows.

I had the evidence in my hands when I showed Shadow the weeds. "Weeds, Shadow. These are weeds." His tail twitched as he spoke, "In the wild, there is no such thing as a weed. Nature accommodates and integrates all forms of life. In nature, balance is achieved over the long-term without the aid of or interference of a human supervisor." As I was considering that Shadow thought of me as a interfering supervisor of weeds, he continued, "Even though one plant may prevail over others for a period of time, it will eventually reach it's peak and then decline, allowing others to be born and survive. It's a self-regulating process."

I had not looked at a weed serving any purpose other than being an unwanted intruder nor had I thought about it's possible uses including being a necessary part of a natural cycle. A weed is a messenger from the wilderness of Mother Earth reminding me to consider my actions and how they are affecting the balance of nature as I quickly learned from what The Shadow Knows.

Cool Cats

We are experiencing the dog days of summer, and I continue to be amazed how cool the cats are at the sanctuary. I always learn so many new things and am continually inspired as I volunteer at Big Cat Rescue. Let me share with you some of the ways the cats are being cool as we are nearing the peak of summer.

TJ and Bengali saunder over to their pools and as they test the water with a paw, they slowly allow their legs to go deeper into the water as they squat to feel the coolness on their bellies before laying in the water. Shere Khan and China Doll go for a short swim before stretching out for an overdue nap. Pharaoh plays in the water as his water bowl is cleaned and filled. Raindance lifts her face to feel the spray of the water as it splashes off her water bowl as a volunteer cleans her lockout. Catera runs through the dense palmetto bushes feeling the cool drops of water as they ricochet off his eating block. The cougar cubs take turns pawing and then "falling" in their pool. Some of the other cats like small pools of water as they paw and play in their drinking bowls that are freshly filled. The fishing cats take a dip after stalking the peacocks that dare to come close to their Cat-A-Tats. Yet other cats are asleep in their dens or under the shade of the trees and others sit high on top of their dens keeping cool as any slight breeze fans over them.

Want to BE cool during these hot summer days? Come out to Big Cat Rescue and get inspired by the infinite possibilities of what it takes to be cool.

Sabre's Cat-tured Thrills

Each life has the potential to be thrilling, dramatic and inspiring. Sabre, a beautiful black leopard, knows he has the choice to design his life by cat-turing thrills when opportunities present themselves such as people visiting the sanctuary and stopping by to say hello to him. He does not live his life as a practical matter, so excitement does not overwhelm him. But, to help you ease any anxiety you may have about integrating all that you find exciting in your life, Sabre has de-tails he would like to share with you.

Before jumping to any conclusions, ask Sabre to come and stretch out beside you. Allow your eyes to slowly close as you take a deep breath. To understand what excites and thrills you, ask Sabre to help you feel like a cat. Observe and ponder your reactions to the activities, circumstances, concepts and events that make up your life. Don't get involved in the de-tails as this will tend to keep you from feeling the excitement. Create a list of the things that make your heart race, and find ways to integrate them into your daily life.

When you choose to do more of what excites you, your daily life will be imbued with exhilaration, pleasure and optimistic anticipation. You will pounce on more opportunities that will make your life fun and fulfilling. Surprises will await you as you remember how Sabre taught you how cat-tured thrills open your heart to the passion that lies within.

WHO AM I?

Surprise! I got you. Not really, but I like to stalk people on the tours and jump out of nowhere to surprise them. I am a joker at heart and am very funny. I don' t take things too seriously. I see the good in life and encourage people to take another look at how life can be. I enjoy people and am very social. I may be black, but I see the light. Surprise me by guessing Who I Am.

WHAT IF?

The cats ask, "WHAT IF........You were aware and remembered when you see us and feel the power we are, we are helping you to connect with the power within yourself. Knowing the power begins where the fear ends, what action would you take that you had fear of before?"

Shanghai's Art of Focus

Sometimes when we try to protect ourselves, we can inadvertently keep out the good that is coming our way. Shanghai, a gorgeous Asian Leopard Cat, is shy and would rather not have to protect himself physically in daily life. All of his senses are tools that he uses to keep engaged in the world, yet has physical scars as evidence of allowing the universe to work magic on his behalf. How can that be?

Learning the art of focus is practicing energy protection. Shanghai can help you learn to filter distractions as he asks you to go into hiding for just a short time. As you close your eyes and exhale, feel Shanghai and his ancestors surround you. As Shanghai creates the vision of himself in the wild, feel what he is feeling. Every blade of grass beckons investigation. Every sound requires stillness to discern the message. The weather communicates his time spent for daily activities. Rather than focusing on what he doesn't want to happen today, he leaves himself open to new experiences. He is making room for something better in his life.

Shanghai was having difficulty protecting himself. He didn't know he would find the perfect home at the sanctuary where he would never have to protect himself again. He trusted. By practicing the art of focus, he was investing his attention into making his life a positive experience. Sometimes what appears to be a negative experience that leave us with physical scars can often guide us on an accelerated path of spiritual growth. We trust even though at the time, it doesn't look good on the surface. Focus on what you want, and the distractions will fall away. You will always be protected. Send Shanghai and the animal spirits gratitude as they have cleared the way for a positive experience in your life.

WHO AM I?

Look close as I sit and watch you walk by. It is easy to hide because I am so small. I am shy by nature, but I don't like attention because I can't move as quickly as I might need to if I was in danger. I have scars on my body from trying to protect myself before coming to the sanctuary. Sometimes, I am not sure what to do, so I can get into trouble. I like a quiet, peaceful home. Peek into my home and see Who I Am.

Sassy's Channels of Emotion

Do you ever feel irritable and impatient with everyone around you? Sassy, a little Caracal full of fire and hiss, knows how it feels to be calmly laying and minding her own business when Rusty, her mate, walks by when least expected and interrupts her peace. If you feel the same way, Sassy has a couple of ideas to share with you that help her regain her internal equilibrium so she can re-attune herself to her responses to Rusty and her environment.

Though the feelings that certain people, events and situations awaken within us may be quite strong, we can channel them into a variety of activities. Choosing this new way of BEING begins with closing your eyes and relaxing. Ask Sassy to lay down beside you as take a deep breath and think about how you react with your intense emotions. Sassy reminds us our reactions are ours to control when we accept that the emotional responses we have to the world around us need not dictate how we choose to BEhave. For example, instead of lashing out, we can take up creative pursuits by our joy, pain, sorrow or passion, and discovering we are in possession of a deep reservoir of imagination we can draw upon when in need of inspiration.

When we choose to respond this way, we are empowered to make constructive use of our feelings regardless of the nature of the circumstances unfolding around us. We will see and acknowledge that the path we choose to take is ours to determine. We will feel less irritable and calmer once we recognize that we do not have to react peevishly to the tumultuous feelings coursing through us. We can maximize our experience by creating new channels of emotions. To BE or not to BE empowered is the question Sassy leaves us with as we send her heartfelt thanks.
